Report of the Probus general meeting on the 24th September 2026

President opened the meeting at 10.45am, welcomed the 40 members and 1 visitor and gave out the fire safety notice. There were 10 apologies

The President thanked member Norman Bourne for standing in at the last meeting for him

he President asked members to stand for a minute’s silence in memory of founder member Bob Godwin who had passed away on 12th Sept 2026

The President’s question this morning was who said “I have taken more out of alcohol than it has taken out of me “answer Winston Churchill !!

The President said that even with so many apologies it was excellent to see so many members present. The President asked the officers for their reports.

Treasurer had nothing to report.

Speaker Sec Roy Plume reported on the proposed 2027 holiday to Ayr. Flyers and signup sheet is on the table at the back of the room

Social Secretary Jerry Sullivan was absent but RP reminded members of the JCB visit and again the signup sheet is on the table at the back of the room. Required by 8th Oct latest

The president then introduced the speaker to the meeting Alan Eastwood whose talk was titled “The Origins of Pub Signs” Alan, a member of Knutsford and Plumley Probus Club, gave a very entertaining and informative talk about the history of pub signs from Roman times to the present day, Many had historical connections and Alan gave examples of these.

Alan Draper gave the vote of thanks and members expressed their appreciation in the usual manner The President thanked all members for attending today and reminded members that the next meeting is on the 8th October 2026 The President closed the meeting at 11.30am
