Report of the Probus general meeting on the 9th July 2026

President opened the meeting at 10.45am, welcomed the 38 members and 3 visitors and gave out the safety notices.

The president’s question this morning was who said “another name for rock and roll could be Chuck Berry “answer John Lennon

The President said that on this very hot day it was excellent to see so many members present plus distinguished visitors Billy Gibbons and Jim Kirkpatrick

The president asked the officers for their reports.

Treasurer had nothing to report and Speaker had nothing to report

Social Secretary Jerry Sullivan said that the visit to Highfields farm had been excellent and well received

Members who had been on the visit confirmed this.

There was a new social event planned and Jerry gave out the details. It is an afternoon bowls event at Wrenbury Bowling Club on Friday 14th August followed by cream tea at “the Berries” adjacent to the club. Open to members and guests

Flyers are at the back of the room and please sign up by 23rd July

Cost is £15 per head which included green fees

Welfare officer Joe Hoyles said good to see Brian Mayhew Smith and Brian Johnson at the meeting

Joe had also spoken to Bob Bennion who is home now but cannot stand at the moment and Bob would welcome any visitors

Hon Sec had nothing to report

The President then introduced Pete Graham who gave a talk on the "History of Rock an Roll"

Pete gave a very entertaining and informative talk with many musical excerpts of such artists as Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Everly Brothers, Cliff Richard, Beatles and so on

Pete also has many snippets of information such as the term rock and roll was first used by Alan Freed in his 1951 radio show in the US

Pete said he was a big fan of Buddy Holly and also the Beatles

He also gave talks on the Beatles and the Chelsea Pensioners

Geoff Callwood gave the vote of thanks and members expressed their appreciation in the usual manner

The president thanked all members for attending today and reminded members that our next meeting is on 23rd July 2026 and the topic is “Finding Elmo “

The president closed the meeting at 12noon
